Visual Function Assessment
Dr. Ahmet GÜCÜKOĞLUa
aGöz Hastalıkları ABD, İstanbul Üniversitesi İstanbul Tıp Fakültesi, İSTANBUL This review concentrates on problems which, more or less, affect visual acuity of the eye depending on the structural ocular differences. Functional vision, which is described as a vision of quality and good health; is affected from age, refractive changes of the eye, and sensory disorders. Moreover, factors such as pupil size, background illumination, and contrast value of the object, have an influence on vision quality. Objective and subjective methods used in the past such as classic examination techniques and evaluation of the patients’ complaints, are not adequate today for assessing the quality of vision. Today, as a result of the new explanations on vision quality brought by refractive surgery, the conditions required for quality of vision were clearly determined. Lately, alongwith Snellen charts with high contrast values to measure the contrast threshold, subjective contrast plates and wavefront analyse methods have become the routine for assessing the quality of vision. These developments, have revealed the importance of lens which is the second refractive environment of the eye and led to significant developments in artificial intraocular lens designs. The decrease in contrast sensivity should not be forgotten as the first sign of the loss of functional vision. Keywords: Snellen, visual acuity, aberation, vision quality, contrast, contrast sensivitry, cataract, asphericintraocular lensesTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2007, 3(43):1-8
